3-8 Curriculum

3-8 Curriculum

The GWCRS Curriculum was written by the GWCRS faculty and staff and is reviewed yearly and changed as needed.  The GWCRS was the first Catholic elementary school in the diocese with its own written curriculum which is based on national standards and high academic expectations.

The GWCRS Science curriculum was recently reviewed.  The new Science curriculum focuses on hands-on science using Delta & Foss Science kits in every grade – Kindergarten through Grade 8.  Science notebooks are incorporated throughout all grade levels.

Grade 3 follows a strict primary school curriculum which emphasizes instruction in Reading, Language Arts, Mathematics, Religion and Spanish. Classes at this grade level are self-contained. Computer education will be introduced, as well as continued Art, Music and Physical Education classes.

Grades 4 and 5 serve as transitional grades between the primary and the middle school grades. Our program in these grades emphasizes the development of study and organization skills and easing the way for students into the middle school structure.

A remedial reading teacher is on staff to help students with reading difficulties in grades 3 – 6.

Teachers at the middle school level work in grade level teams, with a special emphasis on high academic standards, coordination of the educational program, and personal interaction between the teachers and students. These teams meet regularly to make sure they are working together for the good of all the students.   The system works to have teachers instruct in their areas of expertise, covering all the major academic subjects including religion. There are also special programs offered computer education, art, music, Spanish, and physical education.
