SCHOOL PROGRAM

The GWCRSS class size for grades 3 - 8 is 30 students. Diocese of Providence class size is 35 for grades K -8.   If for any reason, the class size should need to be changed parents would be notified.

Grade 3 follows a strict primary school curriculum which emphasizes instruction in Reading, Language Arts, Mathematics, Religion and Spanish. Classes at this grade level are self-contained. Computer education is introduced, as well as Art, Music and Physical Education classes.

Grades 4 and 5 serve as transitional grades between the primary and the middle school grades. Our program in these grades emphasizes the development of study and organization skills and easing the way for students into the middle school structure.

Teachers at the middle school level work in grade level teams, with a special emphasis on high academic standards, coordination of the educational program, and personal interaction between the teachers and students. These teams meet regularly to make sure they are working together for the good of all the students.

Teachers instruct in their areas of expertise, covering all the major academic subjects, plus religion. There are also special programs in computer education, art, music, Spanish, and physical education.

All students attend Mass at least once a month with their school, and Religion is taught daily.  The sacrament of Reconciliation is also offered periodically to all students.  Community service projects, such as collections of food, clothing and toys, contributions to foreign missions, and environmental clean-ups are also used to help students learn the Christian values of faith, love, service, sacrifice, giving, cooperation and compassion.

Teachers use a wide variety of methods and techniques, including interdisciplinary teaching, wherein teachers often collaborate on a topic unit that incorporates each of the academic subjects.  This approach enables teachers and students to examine the connections between subject areas, rather than learn them only as separate courses, which prepares them better for the real world of complex situations.
